Drupal vs. Joomla vs. WordPress – my thoughts as of Jan 2011

There is always an ongoing debate about this topic of which one to choose?  Drupal vs. Joomla vs. WordPress.   My thoughts are from business perspective , if you are a developer or technical person you might have a different opinion.  I am writing for small business owners who does not have much technology background.

When to choose Joomla?

Joomla is a great CMS with thousands of modules.  Once you know what you want to achieve through your website, search for  Joomla templates and modules that would match your needs.  If you find anything that would exactly fit for your need, then Joomla would work for you. My users that are not tech savvy did not like Joomla’s interface at all. They had trouble updating content.

When to choose WordPress?

If you want an easy CMS, and your site contains just pages and blogs etc; you also want a very easy and intuitive content publishing system, then go for WordPress. WordPress is not a good fit for highly scalable applications.  Although, they have fixes for their performances,  we had trouble with our high performance websites. Of course, it is easy to find a WordPress developer to customize it for your needs as well.

When to choose Drupal?

You want a lot power in your CMS, you foresee lot of traffic, you want complex stuff built on top of it, Druapal is your CMS.  There are 1000s of Drupal developers available to customize Drupal to fit your business needs.  Drupal has tons of existing off-the-shelf modules that may meet your needs as well.  Converting Drupal to mobile app or website is also easy.
